Ingredients Glossary

We believe in the best of both worlds.

Not every natural ingredient is good for you, nor is every synthetic bad. The best products are where those two collide with carefully-selected ingredients and no compromises.

Our commitment to this philosophy is reflected in our meticulous formulation process, where we carefully select the best ingredients and avoid any compromises in quality or safety. We understand that our customers deserve the best, and we strive to deliver it to them with every product we create.

At ID, we value transparency and believe that our customers should be fully informed about the ingredients in our products. That's why we are always happy to share information about our formulations and ingredient lists. We believe that an educated customer is an empowered customer, and we are committed to providing the tools and knowledge our customers need to make informed decisions about their lubricants.

Caprylhydroxamic Acid (CHA)

Type of ingredient: Preservative

What it is: CHA is an amino acid derived from coconut oil. It is often coupled with antimicrobial glycols to create a "preservative free" preservation system. Unlike many other more common preservatives, it is very effective at neutral pH levels. Having a neutral pH makes CHA perfect to add to products, especially since it is compatible with most personal care product ingredients. It is so gentle it is commonly used in baby products.

Main benefits: CHA is a gentle, non-toxic plant-based preservative and broad spectrum anti-fungal agent. It is commonly used as a preservative in cosmetic and personal care products to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other harmful microorganisms that can spoil the product or cause skin irritation. It is also used as a chelating agent, which helps to stabilize the pH of the product and prevent oxidation.

Carbomer

Type of ingredient: Thickener

What it is: Carbomer is used as a thickening agent. Before we hydrate it, Carbomer is a white, fluffy powder that is highly absorbent and can absorb up to 100 times its weight in water. Once hydrated, it is clear and adds viscosity (thickness) to the lubricant.

Main Benefits: Carbomer creates thick, creamy textures in a variety of personal care products. Its high absorbency also makes it effective at stabilizing formulations and improving their texture and consistency. Additionally, carbomer can help to improve the efficacy of active ingredients by helping them to penetrate the skin more effectively.

Dimethicone and Dimethiconol

Type of ingredient: Emollient/Skin Conditioning Agent

What it is: Dimethicone and Dimethiconol are types of silicone based polymers derived from silicon, a naturally occurring element found in sand, quartz, and rocks. In cosmetic and personal care products, various types of silicone are used to improve the texture, spread-ability, and stability of formulations.

Main benefits: Silicones help to smooth and soften the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and provide a protective barrier against moisture loss. They do not clog pores and are generally well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin.  Additionally, silicones can improve the stability and longevity of products, allowing them to retain their texture, consistency, and efficacy over time.

Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract

Type of Ingredient: Herbal Extract

What it is: Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract is a natural extract derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, also known as the maidenhair tree. This tree is one of the oldest living tree species and is native to China. The extract is usually standardized to contain 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, which are the active compounds responsible for its health benefits.

Main benefits: The extract of Ginkgo is believed to have powerful antioxidant properties. It is used to help prevent free-radical damage as well as balance and revitalize the skin.

Glycerin (Plant-based)

Type of ingredient: Humectant

What it is: Plant-based glycerin, also known as vegetable glycerin, is a clear and odorless liquid that is typically derived from coconut, soy, or palm oil. It is a natural compound that is also found in humans and animals, and it is widely used in personal care products and has a sweet taste.

Main benefits: Plant-based glycerin is effective at attracting and retaining water. This makes it an excellent ingredient for moisturizing and hydrating the skin. It can also improve the texture and consistency of products, making them easier to apply and more pleasant to use. Additionally, because it is plant-derived, it is considered a more sustainable and environmentally friendly ingredient compared to synthetic alternatives.

Why is it safe?: Plant-based glycerin is considered safe in lubricants because it is a natural, non-toxic humectant derived from vegetable oils that helps retain moisture and mimics the body’s natural lubrication. It’s gentle on sensitive areas, blends well with water, and is compatible with latex condoms. Although some rumors suggest that glycerin may contribute to yeast infections, these claims are largely overstated and often lack context. Glycerin is actually one of the primary ingredients in Monistat, a widely recommended treatment for yeast infections. This reinforces its safety for vaginal use—even during periods of sensitivity or imbalance.

Parabens

Type of ingredient: Preservative

What it is: Parabens are a class of synthetic preservatives that are commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, and some foods to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and other harmful microorganisms.

Main benefits: The main benefit of using parabens as preservatives is their ability to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms and increase the shelf life of products. They are effective against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, making them a popular choice for use in a variety of consumer products.

Why is it safe?: There are several types of parabens; such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Not all are used equally, and only certain types are widely recognized as safe. The one we use, methylparaben, is among the most extensively studied and is considered by major health authorities, including the U.S. FDA, the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), and the World Health Organization (WHO). These agencies have thoroughly reviewed the scientific data and concluded that methylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben are safe for use in cosmetics and personal lubricants.

Concerns about parabens began with a 2004 study that found traces of parabens in breast tumor tissue. However, the study did not establish a causal link between parabens and cancer, nor did it account for the widespread presence of parabens in everyday products. Since then, further research has consistently failed to demonstrate that parabens cause harm when used at regulated levels.

In short, methylparaben is a well-regulated, effective, and safe preservative used to keep our products stable, fresh, and free of harmful microbes.

Paullinia Cupana (Guarana) Leaf Extract

Type of Ingredient: Herbal Extract

What it is: Paullinia Cupana, commonly known as guarana, is a climbing plant native to the Amazon basin in Brazil. Its seeds contain a high amount of caffeine, along with other stimulant compounds such as theobromine and theophylline.

Main benefits: Guarana is known to increase blood flow, which can improve arousal and sexual pleasure

Propanediol

Type of ingredient: Humectant / Solvent

What it is: Propanediol, also known as 1,3-propanediol, is a clear, odorless liquid that is derived from corn sugar or other renewable sources. With its skin-friendly performance, enhanced miniaturization and excellent aesthetics, propanediol is ideal for personal care products.

Main benefits: Propanediol has several benefits as a skincare and cosmetic ingredient. As a humectant, it can help attract and retain moisture in the skin, which can help improve hydration and prevent dryness. It also has a smooth and silky texture, which can help improve the spreadability and absorption of other ingredients in a product. In addition, propanediol can act as a solvent, which means it can help dissolve other ingredients and keep them evenly mixed in a formulation.
Compared to propylene glycol, propanediol is often preferred in natural and organic products due to its renewable and sustainable sourcing. It is also considered to be less irritating and more skin-friendly than propylene glycol, making it a good alternative for those with sensitive skin. Overall, propanediol is a versatile and effective ingredient that can improve the performance and feel of skincare and cosmetic products.

Sodium Benzoate

Type of ingredient: Preservative

What it is: Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, a white, odorless crystalline powder. It is commonly used as a food preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. It is also used in personal care products to help extend their shelf life. Why add preservative? Without it the lubricant would only stay fresh for a few days!

Main benefits: Sodium benzoate is an effective preservative that helps prevent food and cosmetic products from spoiling. It has been extensively tested and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when used within approved limits.

Sucralose

Type of ingredient: Artificial sweetener

What it is: Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that is made from sugar through a chemical modification process. It is also known by its brand name, Splenda. Sucralose is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, but it contains no calories.

Main benefits: It is commonly used in personal lubricants as a sugar substitute. Sugar is typically not used in personal lubricants because it can cause irritation and increase the risk of yeast infections or bacterial overgrowth in the genital area. This is because sugar is a source of nutrients that can encourage the growth of microorganisms, including bacteria and yeast, which can lead to infection and discomfort. Sucralose is also used in a lot of flavored lubricants to enhance the taste and smell of the product.

Trifolium Pratense (Red Clover) Flower Extract

Type of Ingredient: Herbal Extract

What it is: Trifolium Pratense (Red Clover) Flower Extract is a natural extract derived from the flowers of the Trifolium pratense plant, commonly known as red clover. The extract is usually standardized to contain isoflavones, which are the active compounds responsible for its health benefits.

Main benefits: The extract has been found to improve skin health by increasing collagen production and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Isoflavones in the extract also have antioxidant properties, which help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals.

Vanillyl Butyl Ether

Type of Ingredient: Warming agent

What it is: Vanillyl Butyl Ether (VBE) is a synthetic compound that belongs to the family of vanilloids. It is commonly used as a warming agent in personal care products such as body lotions, creams, and massage oils.

Main benefits: VBE provides a warming sensation on the skin by stimulating the nerve endings and increasing blood flow. This can help to soothe sore muscles and joints, as well as improve the absorption and efficacy of other active ingredients in the product.
VBE is often used as a substitute for Capsaicin, which is a natural compound found in chili peppers that also provides a warming sensation. However, VBE has a milder and more controllable effect, making it an excellent choice for ID Lubricants. It is also considered safe for use and has been approved by regulatory bodies such as the FDA and the European Commission.
